Physician Well-Being

Relieving burden and burnout

Physician Well-Being Programs

Creating a sense of community among colleagues and reducing administrative burden and burnout are a top priority for the MGPO. Experts on physician burnout suggest that using a multipronged effort can be effective in addressing this issue. We have funded many centralized and departmental initiatives and continue to find new ways for physicians to connect. Read more below about our events and subsidized fitness options.

What is the

Frigoletto Committee on Physician Well-Being

The Fred Frigoletto Committee on Physician Well-Being oversees the centralized and department-level initiatives and programs that aim to address well-being and burden. From the start, the process of creating the committee and its mandate has been a grassroots effort, with physicians involved at every step. The elected members, representing a range of specialties, work to reduce burden and promote career development and individual well-being.

Members
Suggest a Solution

All MGPO physicians can contact a Frigoletto Committee member with ideas and suggestions. Click here for the members page.

While our current initiatives have helped some physicians, we have learned there is more we can do. What can the MGPO do to make your work-life better? All suggestions will be reviewed by the Frigoletto Committee and, if possible, addressed.

Investment in Administrative Burden Relief

For several years, the MGPO has funded many centralized initiatives to reduce administrative burden and burnout, and promote physician well-being and build community.

  • Bluetree Pilot. MGPO hired Bluetree Network to assess Epic workflows and make recommendations to lessen clicks and time spent using Epic.
  • Immunization admin certification. 30 medical assistants got certified in vaccine administration: funding covered the costs of training, test prep materials, and exam.
Kitty Hawk

Department Grants

In 2018, the MGPO received funding for departmental-based programs to reduce administrative burden and promote physician well-being. We received 3 additional years of funding to support these programs through 2021. Check with your department leadership to see what they have planned. Guidelines included:

  • Faculty participation
  • 3-year funding available. Multi-year project plans required with minimum funding of  $40,000 per year
  • Salary support for project managers only, not physicians or support staff
  • A measurable impact on physicians
  • Progress updates

Individual Grants

  • Faculty Engagement Award: Pathology
  • Innovation Award: PM&R
  • Wellness Award: Surgery

Funded by the Frigoletto Committee on Physician Well-Being, the MGPO Uplift Grant program provides 5 grants of up to $20,000 to physician applicants to support creative ideas to improve physician well-being. Projects that are highly scalable and align with MGPO priorities may be eligible for additional funding. Click here to apply and learn more.
