Parental Leave and Backup Child Care

Mother's Corner

MGPO Offers 8 Weeks of Parental Leave
Appointed members of the MGH/MGPO Professional Staff (including faculty and clinical and research fellows) are eligible for 8 weeks of centrally funded paid leave when they become new parents through the Parental Leave Program for Professional Staff. A Professional Staff member’s time away from work is subject to the time off policy of the Professional Staff member’s department. Please note that MGPO policies do not pertain to GME residents, who instead follow the GME trainee policies. To use this benefit, speak with your unit chief of service, department administrator, or MGPO benefits consultant.

Backup Child Care
Even the best child care arrangements can fall through – a child’s caregiver gets sick or the school closes unexpectedly. The MGH Backup Child Care Center can provide emergency childcare services to MGH benefits-eligible employees. Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), the Backup Child Care Center provides a safe, nurturing, and enjoyable learning environment.

Backup child care is available for infants through children age 12 in the following situations:

  • The child’s caregiver is sick or on vacation
  • Regular child care or school is closed
  • Parents need to work extra hours
  • Child care arrangements have suddenly terminated
  • Parents are looking for permanent child care and need a transition period

School and summer vacation coverage is also available. Please note that the MGH patient families may also use the MGH Backup Child Care Center for their children when a family member is attending an appointment or receiving hospital services on location at MGH. Backup childcare is not available for sick children.
